Huon Valley Council’s Community Awards recognise the contribution community members and groups make to the Huon Valley.
The awards are presented annually in an official ceremony, and each recipient is gifted a framed certificate by the mayor.

2021 WINNERS
| 2021 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for significant contribution to the Huon Valley community and promoting strong community values. | Desmond Hay Des is being recognised for his efforts to restore an important heritage site in Franklin. In 2010, Des found the Congregational Cemetery, located off Maxfields Road, in disrepair. It was overrun with blackberries and weeds, and had suffered significant damage to headstones and graves. Des felt that the pioneer settlers of the Huon Valley deserved a resting place that was well-respected, and better looked after. Des organised working bees to construct fencing around the cemetery, clean up the vegetation, restore headstones, and put in lawn and new plants. This process took seven years, and today, only general maintenance is needed to keep the cemetery in good shape. After countless hours of research, Des and his team have so far catalogued around 150 burials that have taken place at the site between 1860 and 1950. Thanks to Des, these important records will be publicly available for generations to come. In saving the Congregational Cemetery from neglect, Des and his team of volunteers have helped to preserve the history of the Huon Valley. The site has been visited by people throughout Tasmania, Australia, New Zealand and America, who have heard about its story through the grapevine. Des’ efforts have brought people in the community together through working bees, volunteering opportunities and research projects. For many years, Des volunteered as a trainer and first aid officer for the Franklin Football Club. He was also a St John Ambulance volunteer early in his working career, and later a volunteer ‘ambo’ and communications offer for the Ambulance Service. |
| 2021 YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for outstanding contribution to the Huon Valley community. | Dylan Lovell Dylan is being recognised for his outstanding contributions to the Huon Valley community. Over the last three years, Dylan has become a vital part of the Huonville Lions Football Club. Dylan attends footy training all four nights of the week, knows everyone’s names, provides coaching assistance and feedback on performance, and helps with any tasks that need to be done. His commitment has seen him become a loved and respected member of the club, and his dedication is such that people would be worried if he were not present at a training night, game or meeting. Dylan is at every game, watching and cheering the team on. The senior leadership team goes to him for advice, stats and details of past games. He is a member of the board, attending each meeting and contributing to the club’s vision and goals. Dylan is involved in all aspects of the club – not just the games. He helps out with the Lions Lotto, dressing up, drawing the numbers, and helping to make the evenings fun and enjoyable for everyone. As a volunteer at the Huonville Library, Dylan undertakes reception tasks, handling enquiries with enthusiasm and a smile on his face at all times. Dylan helps library staff members run story time sessions, where he sings and reads books to young children. Dylan has gained confidence in this role, starting out as a shy teenager to become a self-reliant young man. On a weekly basis, Dylan volunteers at the local schools, supporting young people, and is a well-respected role model in young people’s lives. Dylan is also a volunteer at the local Salvation Army Corps, offering many hours of the help to the group. |
| 2021 COMMUNITY GROUP OF THE YEAR Given for outstanding contribution to the wellbeing of the Huon Valley community. | Port Cygnet Venturer Unit The Port Cygnet Venturer Unit is a group of young people aged between 14 and 17 years of age. Many of them have been in the Scout group since they were six years old, and have come to have a deep respect for the importance of Anzac Day services and all that Anzac means. The Port Cygnet Venturers are being recognised for their innovation and dedication to remembering the Anzacs. For 13 years, the Venturer Unit has organised a Dawn Service for the Cygnet community. At first, their dawn services were attended by a handful of people. Since then, it has grown into an event that up to 200 people attend. This achievement by the Port Cygnet Venturer Unit is an inspiration to everyone in our community, and a credit to the young people involved. The group also provides a free breakfast for those who attend. This is a very special event for not only the young people and leaders involved, but also the wider Cygnet and Huon Valley community. Last year, when public Anzac Day services were cancelled due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the Port Cygnet Venturer Unit filmed a private dawn service and released the video on social media for the public to view at dawn. The Port Cygnet Venturer Unit provides support to a range of volunteer groups and events in the Huon Valley, including school fairs, fundraisers, and picnics. |
| 2021 COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR Given for outstanding contribution to the wellbeing of the Huon Valley community. | Dover Seafest For the third year running, Dover Seafest has attracted large crowds to the beautiful Dover Foreshore and enabled many first-time visitors to appreciate the area’s natural beauty and fresh produce. The Dover Seafest has become a destination event, helping to boost accommodation bookings in the area and contribute to the local economy. The event involves a number of local schools and community groups, including Sacred Heart Catholic School, Dover District School, Huon FM, and the Huon Valley SES. Last year, the local schools each held a fundraising stall, helping students build their confidence and workplace skills. |
| 2021 CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION | Chloe Moore Chloe is being recognised for the ISO cuddle bears project, which has brought comfort to many people living with a disability during COVID-19. When lockdown restrictions came into place last year, Chloe’s younger brother Lochie needed to self-isolate for far longer than most children due to his disability. 12-year-old Chloe was inspired to reach out to children living with a disability during that difficult time. After meeting 11-year-old Grace at a sewing lesson, the two made plans to use their time in isolation to sew ISO cuddle bears to give to people with a disability who were isolating at home due to their increased COVID-19 risk. The bears were placed in Boredom Buster Bags organised by Li-Ve (“Live”) Tasmania. Chloe and Grace donated the materials for the bears themselves. Chloe has also volunteered for Club CHARGE, and often gives up her time to attend school holiday programs at Li-Ve Tasmania and to help her mum, Kylie, out at home. In November last year, Chloe was awarded the Humanity Award for the ISO cuddle bears project from the Fred Hollows Foundation. |
2020 WINNERS
| 2020 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for significant contribution to the Huon Valley community and promoting strong community values. | Kent Wells Kent Wells works tirelessly for the betterment of the Huon Valley and is known for his outstanding sense of community. A true quiet achiever, Kent’s contributions to the community often slip under the radar with no fanfare or headlines. He gets on with the task at hand in a no-nonsense, practical way for the benefit of others. Kent has been a Lions Club member since 1988 and a Lions Club of Huon member since 1991, performing a number of roles including treasurer and secretary, and is currently serving his second year as President. It is estimated that Kent has volunteered more than 11,000 hours during his 32 years as a Lions member, doing good work for the people throughout Huon Valley community, particularly lower-income families and individuals. Kent has volunteered as the official auditor for the Huon Pony Club for more than 20 years, and has been a key member of the Huon Valley Relay for Life organising committee since 2011. He was a founding member of the Huonville Abbeyfield House Committee, and has been the elected President since the year 2000. Kent has also donated his time to complete financial audits for a number of Tasmanian committees, including the Huonville Swimming Club, Dover Golf Club, Sorell Junior Football Club, and Latrobe Tennis Club, and volunteers his skill set to various other community groups. Kent and his wife Trudy manned the Lions Club food stall daily for the entire period that the Animal Evacuation Centre was operational during the bushfires in early 2019. Committed to helping others, Kent is described as a shining light, quietly leading the way for anyone who cares about those in need of a helping hand. |
| 2020 COMMUNITY GROUP OF THE YEAR Given for outstanding contribution to the wellbeing of the Huon Valley community. | Geeveston Cares Geeveston Cares aims to facilitate acts of kindness for families facing difficult times, and does so on behalf of the whole Geeveston community. The group continues to grow a stronger, healthier and happier Huon through helping others, fostering engagement between families, and connecting people to services that may assist in times of need. Various ad hoc acts of kindness that the group facilitates include giving a card and flowers to a bereaved family, bringing daily hot meals or pamper packs to someone who is recently home from hospital, gifting petrol vouchers or accommodation vouchers for someone travelling for medical treatment, or sending a box of baby products to new mothers. The group also organises get-togethers and meals for community volunteers. On a larger scale, Geeveston Cares ran the Bell Family Fundraiser which raised more than $40,000 for a family of six young children who lost their mum. The group have held quiz nights and fundraisers for families needing assistance for interstate medical travel and other urgent financial situations. On a regular basis, Geeveston Cares assists the Sacred Heart School Giving Tree to deliver gifts and hampers to families doing it tough at Christmas. Hampers are also delivered to people who may be on their own during the holidays. No individual takes recognition for Geeveston Cares’ acts of kindness – they are from the community as a whole. | 2020 SPORTS AWARD Given for a noteworthy record of achievement in Sport, or for making a significant contribution and encouraging sporting activities within the Huon Valley. | Lawson Grey At just 17, Lawson Grey was selected to be the 2019 Captain of the Tasmanian State Karate Team for the Australian Karate Federation National Karate Championships held in Launceston last year. Demonstrating leadership, organisational skills and discipline, he showed empathy and enthusiasm towards the other athletes in the State Team and supported them to achieve their goals. Lawson assisted the state coaches in running warm-ups and training drills, and acted as an intermediary between the coaches and other athletes. Lawson achieved Tasmania’s first silver medal in Team Kata (forms). He helped the coaches organise the other athletes, and created an inclusive and supportive environment, helping calm the younger and newer athletes, and creating chants and calls which built camaraderie within the team. Lawson assists his instructor at a club level as a sub-instructor, and runs separate training sessions outside normal times so others can have extra training. He self-funds trips to train with visiting instructors, and brings back the skills he learns to share with the club and State Team. Lawson has joined in the Geeveston Parkrun to support another club member, and has been named his club’s Senior of the Year multiple times. Lawson is currently a Venturer at the Huonville Scout Group and has run hikes and other activities alongside his studies in Outdoor Education. the Huon Valley Community Banks, Geeveston Progress Association, Geeveston Op Shop, and many other businesses and individuals. |
| 2020 SPECIAL COMMENDATION | Andrew Burgess Andrew Burgess is being recognised for his passion for the Geeveston community and his involvement with various groups in the area over many years. As a local business owner he has been a strong participant in the Geeveston Progress Association, Geeveston Archives & History Society, and Geeveston Town Hall Company, and is a former local Scoutmaster and past President of the Geeveston Golf Club. Andrew is a driving force behind many events in the town, most recently as coordinator for the annual Wheels in the Park event held at Heritage Park. Andrew’s community involvement has provided the impetus for projects that would not have otherwise been achieved, including the annual Art Show presented by the Geeveston Progress Association, the monthly Twilight Feasts hosted by the Geeveston Town Hall Company, and many other fundraising activities held by community groups. With a strong community network, Andrew is a person who gets things done, and is to be commended for the ‘can do’ approach he takes to everything he is involved in. |

| 2019 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for significant contribution to the Huon Valley community and promoting strong community values. | Eric Fernandez Eric Fernandez of Ranelagh is remembered as a man of compassion and understanding who spent his life quietly involved in all aspects of his community. He worked as a teacher in a number of countries and eventually settled in the Huon Valley when he retired. Eric was heavily involved in the Huon Disability Network. In a Huon Valley Youth Services film project he was quoted as saying he wanted nothing more than for people to be thoughtful, kind and considerate of people with disabilities. This is how his community saw him. Eric was also a long-standing member of the Lions Club of the Huon Valley and was regularly seen working the barbecue on a Saturday morning at the local hardware shop raising funds for the group. He was a lover of music. A passion which saw him take the community on a journey of appreciation during his regular segment on Huon FM. On top of his many commitments Eric was also involved with the Huon Valley Theatre Company and served as its president. He would regularly visit people who were unable to get out and about and actively welcomed new people into the community. On one occasion he went out of his way to welcome an Indian priest to the community cooking meals for the visitor and taking him on a trip to the mainland to show him other parts of the country. Sadly, Eric passed away last year. His posthumous nomination for this award is a sign of appreciation from his entire community. He will be greatly missed. |
| 2019 YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for a significant contribution to, and as an inspirational role model for, the Huon Valley community. | Tamara Jacobson Since she was 8 Tamara Jacobson has been a member of the Huon Districts Pony Club. For the past 18 years she has consistently represented the club in teams and individually. She has coached and ridden in the club’s games team at state level and competed in the Royal Hobart Show’s prestigious Team of Three event since she was 9. She has been successfully coaching the teams for the past 6 years. She has served as president of the pony club’s junior committee, run its canteen and been involved in numerous fundraisers. She has donated at least 50 hours of her time year on year to her club and the sport she loves. Tamara was recognised a high achiever award in her last competing year, at the age of 21, by Pony Club Tasmania, and has since continued her involvement as a coach and adult rider. She was nominated for this award for her exemplary sportsmanship and values and is considered a wonderful role model to the community. |
| 2019 COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR Given for outstanding contribution to the wellbeing of the Huon Valley community. | Huon Agricultural Society – Huon Show The Huon Show is one of the state’s favourite and enduring Agricultural events. Throughout its 72 years the show has been run entirely by volunteers of all ages. While Agricultural events are on the decline around the country the Huon Show continues to thrive attracting up to 14,000 visitors every year. The Show is a true celebration of our region with participation from the SES, local fire brigades, football clubs, Apex, Rotary and Lions Clubs and many more. It also allows more than 100 local business and groups to runs stalls giving them invaluable exposure. It is impossible to calculate how many volunteers make the show the success that it is, from organisers, stewards, helpers, judges, exhibitors, stall holders and others the numbers would run into the thousands. The Huon Show was nominated for this award because it truly brings the community together in a celebration of the Huon Valley Lifestyle. |
| 2019 SPORTS AWARD Given for a noteworthy record of achievement in Sport, or for making a significant contribution and encouraging sporting activities within the Huon Valley. | Grace Lovell Grace Lovell’s commitment to women’s football and cricket in the Huon Valley has made a lasting impression on our community. During last year’s football season she coached a girl’s junior team with the Houn Lions while playing for the Southern Storm. She then went on to back up in cricket season, coaching a junior team for Huon North while competing in the inaugural open women’s competition. Supporters say Grace shows young girls that you don’t have to be the best to play a sport and is considered a great role model for girls and women in her community. |
| 2019 SPECIAL COMMENDATION | Dover South and Action Group for the Dover Seafest Dover and South Action Group was nominated for its efforts organising the return of the Dover Seafest. The event was praised as a resounding success with a great turnout from the Dover community and surrounding areas. It’s hoped Seafest will continue to bring many visitors to the far south for years to come. |

| 2018 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for significant contribution to the Huon Valley community and promoting strong community values. | Pam Lane Many of you will know Pam from her extensive community work in her roles at Huonville High, the last one being Assistant Principal before her retirement. Pam has already been recognised for her teaching being the only Tasmanian finalist to win one of the Australian Scholarship Group National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA) for 2016. Pam was selected from more than 1350 nominations in 2016, and honoured for her inspiring and innovative contribution to teaching and her outstanding commitment to education. For a number of years, Pam (along with Nic Smith) has been involved largely as chief organiser for students from Huonville High School to travel to Vietnam and Cambodia where they visit orphanages and help build houses for needy families. Students build the houses by hand and work together to complete the project during their stay. It is not a holiday, but more an experience in gratitude and awareness and humanitarian aid. Students and parents say the experience is life changing. In addition, Pam takes a group of adults every second year. They participate in the same house building model, sleep on the floor and work all day long to improve the life of a family in need. Pam was instrumental in setting up the Coffee for a Cause program at Huonville High School. Started with a grant from Council, students are trained by qualified baristas and once trained volunteer at events festivals and functions. All profits raised go the School’s SWAP Program which works to raise awareness of the causes and consequences of poverty at School and within the local community and raises money to support poverty based and humanitarian projects around the world. Pam is currently developing swim safety programs at the Huonville Pool through Royal Life Saving and is also a founding member of SOAR - Sisters on a Roll, the Huon Valley Women’s cycling group. |
| 2018 YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for a significant contribution to, and as an inspirational role model for, the Huon Valley community. | Toby Thorpe Toby Thorpe is a student in year 11 at Huonville High School and has demonstrated outstanding leadership, confidence, and commitment as leader of the student Zayed Huon Energy Futures Team at Huonville High School for the last two years. In 2017 he was selected from the student team to go to Abu Dhabi and accept the Zayed Future Energy Prize on behalf of the students at the school. He has been responsible for building social media and the website, which resulted in an outstanding number of 375,000 people connecting with Huonville High School promoting the school and community as a sustainable and renewable area. Toby has enthusiastically promoted our small rural high school on the international arena. He has spoken to a group of Principals at an education conference in Fiji and to a number of students and teachers around Australia and New Zealand. Toby applied for a grant from Keep Australia Beautiful to build a Pet Bottle Greenhouse in the Community Garden. He has single-handedly initiated recycling in the school including toner cartridges, toiletries and beauty container waste. He also successfully applied for an Inspiring Australia grant enabling an extra 4 students to go to Abu Dhabi for International Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in 2018 when the school returns to report on their progress. Toby is a member of the Huon Valley Council’s Youth Advisory Committee representing the youth of this community. He represented the council at the Tasmanian Youth Conference this year. Toby is also representing the Huon Valley at the upcoming Tasmanian Youth Government Conference. Toby was also the secretary of the Huonville Lions Junior Football Club for the 2017 season working together with volunteers all around the Huon Valley to run an effective and enjoyable not-for-profit sporting club. Toby is very motivated, dedicated and genuine and will readily accept advice. He has developed exceptional leadership talents that will continue to motivate him to represent positive on-going initiatives for the Huon community. |
| 2018 COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR Given for outstanding contribution to the wellbeing of the Huon Valley community. | Huon Agricultural Society – Small Farms Expo The Small Farms Expo is run on the last Sunday in March each year and provides an outlet for hobby farmers and other primary producers in the Huon Valley to show case their goods and services. Visitors are encouraged to make a gold coin donation for entry. The Expo began in 2015 and has steadily built up visitor numbers. The 2017 Expo saw attracted approximately 6,000 visitors. There has also been an increase in the number of businesses exhibiting on the day. The Expo currently has the backing of the Huon Agricultural Society but is working its way to financial autonomy with a number of local businesses donating to the running costs. The hard work, commitment and dedication of this team has brought value, recognition and community spirit to the Huon which is reflected by its success. The Expo provides a focal point for like minded persons to attend and enjoy what the Huon Valley can offer and the lifestyle it promotes. |
| 2018 SPORTS AWARD Given for a noteworthy record of achievement in Sport, or for making a significant contribution and encouraging sporting activities within the Huon Valley. | Meegan Tongs Meegan joined the Huon Valley Swim Club (formally Huonville Amateur Swimming Club) at the age of 8 as her parents had purchased a boat and they needed to know that Meegan was safe on the water. Throughout the next 10 years as a competitive swimmer she represented the Huon Valley at the Tasmanian Winter Short Course, Summer Long Course, Tasmanian Age, Country Championships which has been renamed recently as the Huon Medal Meet. She was appointed Vice Captain, Team Manager and then Club Captain of a highly competitive swimming Club. At St James Catholic College, Meegan represented her school at the Southern Primary Schools Sport Assoc. Swimming Championships 5 years in a row and was awarded the title Female Class Champion for those 5 years. Over the years Meegan has also donated her time in taking part in many fundraising activities for the Club, including a swimathon, relay for life, selling raffle tickets outside Woolworths, and selling chocolates. I’m sure you’ll agree, Meegan is a worthy recipient of this year’s Sports Award. |

| 2017 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for significant contribution to the Huon Valley community and strong community values. | Lorraine Whelan Lorraine’s passion is recording and preserving the history of Glen Huon and Judbury and the surrounding areas. She has lived most of her life in the Valley and has worked tirelessly to ensure that the stories of our pioneers are not lost or forgotten. Lorraine has been involved with the Glen Progress Association, the Glen Huon Hall Committee, and the Bendigo Bank Steering Committee just to name a few. She has worked as a coordinator of the Upper Huon Historical Society where she volunteered more than 1500 hours each year working on the history of the Valley and its people. Lorraine is cataloging and recording the past and present history of the pioneering families, their homes, marriages, deaths, lands, military service and recreational activities. She has accumulated and preserved vast amounts of pictorial memorabilia and now produces a yearly calendar. We live in a time of rapid change, a time of progress. But history does matter. History is important because it helps us to understand the present. The people who settled and lived where we now live, have helped shaped our values and contributed to the idea of who we are. Lorraine passion and dedication and that of other local historians help us keep the threads and origins of our local stories and as such, play a vital role in shining a light on our past and ensuring we can pass these on to future generations. |
| 2017 YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for a significant contribution to, and as an inspirational role model for, the Huon Valley community. | Annastasia Bedford In her final year of a Bachelor of Marine Science degree at UTAS, places a high demand on Annastasia's time, however she still devotes many hours volunteering in the community. The Port Cygnet Scout Group has been a big part of Annastasia's life, joining as a Venturer Scout in 2010 when we moved to the area. In her time as a Venturer she earned her Queen Scout Award and attained other various certificates including first aid, open water SCUBA diving ticket, day skippers ticket and motor boat licence. In 2011, Annastasia became a youth helper with the Joey section and continued on as assistant leader and eventually Joey Scout leader in 2015 and will soon be taking up the position as Cub Scout Leader. As part of her Scouting life, Annastasia has attended camps in Tasmania and New Zealand as a Venturer, and in Azerbaijan (AZ-UR-BUY-JARN) as a leader, where she was selected as the only Australian representative to attend the camp as part of the international service team. Annastasia is also the State Pen Pal Coordinator for Scouts Tasmania. In May 2010, Annastasia joined the Woodbridge Marine Discovery Centre as a volunteer and has continued to volunteer there. encouraging children to take an interest in their environment and discussing the possibilities available to them in their future. In November 2015, Annastasia was offered a position as a part of a group of 12 young Australians to attend 'The Ship for World Youth Leaders', The participants board the SWY, live together, and while on board, they study and discuss common issues from a global perspective and participate in other various activities that involve multi-cultural and multi-national exchange opportunities. |
| 2017 COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR Given for outstanding contribution to the wellbeing of the Huon Valley community. | Geeveston Town Hall Company – Twilight Feast To understand the success of the Geeveston Town Hall - Twilight Feast, one must first have some understanding of the background of the Geeveston Town Hall (GTH). The GTH is currently managed by a volunteer group representing the local community, that have a plan for Geeveston and more importantly the Town Hall, which the former tenants vacated after a change in direction by Forestry Tasmania. The GTH co. as the volunteers are known, have managed the Town Hall since taking over during 2015 to create a Community precinct that encompasses a Visitors Centre, Museum and History Society, a Commercial Gallery that offers local produce to the estimated 40,000 to 60,000 visitors per annum to the Centre. During this time the GTH co. have run a number of events that are ongoing, including local monthly markets, a Networking event in April 2016, the Variety TasBashers in October 2016. An Art exhibition during Oct - Nov 2016, Which encompassed both school age and open categories that was held in conjunction with the Blossoms in the Valley Festival, that is held in Geeveston. These events along with providing services and advice to local businesses has led to a "whole of Community" benefit, emanating from the GTH. The Jewel in the Crown of the GTH co. is most certainly the Geeveston Town Hall Twilight Feasts, that have been held regularly on the first Thursday of the month. The Geeveston Town Hall Twilight Feasts, have been incredibly well patronised and each twilight feast itself is generated by local businesses and community groups, which work together for the benefit of the community and their businesses. Some of the funds raised assist "Geeveston Cares" a group that assist those in short term need in our Community. The food varies at each feast, with interest always very high and food quality and price range exceptional and affordable. The reason Carol and I feel so strongly about the Twilight Feasts, and their value to the Geeveston Community, hence this nomination, is that the event has been incredibly important to Geeveston. Geeveston has had an image of being a difficult town in which to integrate for new residents, many of whom are new to Tasmania. Without delving too much into the socio economic issues and past history within the region as a whole, this event is the one event that is patronised by long standing residents and very recently arrived residents, from all levels of our community and because of the nature of the event and the close proximity of each person in the Hall, the community is more welcoming, more understanding and certainly a more friendly environment for all our residents to meet and gain a greater understanding of each other our past and our future. We have seen this occur regularly at the Twilight Feast. |
| 2017 SPORTS AWARD Given for a noteworthy record of achievement in Sport, or for making a significant contribution and encouraging sporting activities within the Huon Valley. | Nicola Smith and Pam Lane – Sisters on a Roll (S.O.A.R.) On behalf of S.O.A.R I wish to nominate Nicola Smith and Pam Lane for their initiative, support and ongoing dedication to our women's bike riding group. Women on Wheels now known as S.O.A.R (Sisters On A Roll) first started in March 2016, with just a handful of women. Most of us hadn't ridden a bike in years and we were totally lacking in confidence and ability. However with gentle encouragement and endless amounts of support Nic and Pam managed to coax us out for our first few rides. Loaning us their own bikes and providing reflective safety gear they took us on short rides that quickly gained in length and difficulty - "just a small pinch here and a gentle climb there".... What at first seemed impossible soon became challenging, rewarding and fun. It didn't take long before we were hooked! Our numbers continued to grow each week so Nic and Pam secured Community Grant Funding which enabled them to purchase several loan bikes (for our new-riders). With these funds they also arranged a bike maintenance workshop where we were shown how to change flat tires and service our bikes etc. With the knowledge and gear needed we then felt empowered! Thanks to Nic and Pam we now have 44-Sisters On A Roll. Our group is strong, self-sufficient and continues to welcome new members. Riding provides me with an excellent form of exercise, it is gentle on my joints and is great cardio. But the group is more than just a means of exercise it has also been a great way of connecting with new people and making new friends. There is no way that I would have even considered bike riding before and I am so very grateful to Nic and Pam for getting the group going. Nic and Pam have a proven history of service to the Huon Valley Community through various programs and they work tirelessly to fund raise for many ongoing projects both locally and internationally. Their involvement in S.O.A.R is one example of their wonderful work, but one that that has positively impacted many people. We sincerely hope that their amazing contribution towards women's health, wellbeing and fitness can be formally recognised with an Australia Day Award. |

| 2016 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Given for a significant contribution to, and as an inspirational role model for, the Huon Valley community. | TRENT COWEN A fair go. A concern for the environment. A desire for prosperity with a share for all. Participation in sport. Cultural diversity. The importance of strong community values and support systems, and a keen sense that we each have our own contribution to make the community – all characteristics displayed by the 2016 Citizen of the Year, Trent Cowen. Trent has been nominated for his ongoing enthusiastic dedication and commitment to the Huon Valley community, especially in his home town of Cygnet. Trent’s commitment to the Huon Valley dates back to the late 1980s. From his participation with the Slab Road Cricket Club, Cygnet Football Club, youth work in Cygnet, participation on the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council, Cygnet Tennis Club, Cygnet Mini League Football Club, Southern Storm Football Club to the Huon Valley Council Cygnet Township Committee, The Cygnet Association and St James Catholic College Board of Management, Trent is always willing to put up his hand to help anyone in need or any local organisation. Someone you will always find with a smile on his face, Trent takes everything in his stride whilst supporting his wife Michelle, four boys and being involved in two successful businesses. Trent is being recognised as Citizen of the Year for the huge amount of time that he has volunteered to the Huon Valley community over the past 30 years. |
| 2016 COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL BUILDER AWARD Given for outstanding service and positive contributions to the Huon Valley’s community. | DOVER COMMUNITY WORKSHOP HARRY SAVAGE; YVONNE SAVAGE; RON WELLS In 2010, discussion between residents progressed to a meeting of interested citizens with the idea of commencing a ‘Men’s Shed’ in Dover. A committee was formed with Harry, Yvonne and Ron taking lead roles in researching, planning and obtaining resources to establish the Dover Men’s Shed. During establishment it was decided that such a venue should be available to both men and women within the community, therefore the Men’s Shed evolved into the Community Workshop. Over the past 6 years, Harry, Yvonne and Ron have all contributed many hours into the establishment and ongoing running of the Community Workshop, securing significant funding from both Council and the State Government and seeing some great projects through to fruition. Harry has been a regular attendee on the Workshop wood working day every Thursday and participates in creative workshop projects such as wooden toys, painting and staining. He also makes trays shelves and other items for family and friends, and has made numerous small individual woodwork creations which have been distributed to local businesses for sale. Harry has also participated in the restoral of La Chaloupe, an old wooden boat found derelict lying submerged in the sea at the Far South Wilderness Camp, donated to the Community Workshop in early 2014. Yvonne has been an active member of the Community Workshop since its inception; in fact we are told that she has only missed two craft mornings over the past five years and is the one who opens the workshop every Wednesday morning for craft group. As well as elected Treasurer, Yvonne sews, knits and creates items for Workshop fund raising, participates in activities with the Dover District High School (a very keen “knitting teacher” we hear), whips up delicious morning teas and lunches, and has introduced the Uthando Dolls Project to the Community Workshop. Ron has played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Dover Community Workshop. Taking a lead role in researching, submitting and successfully obtaining numerous grants and funds, Ron is always willing to lend a hand to progress a project. As the Dover Community Workshop continued to flourish, Ron obtained more funding and established a “hot works” extension to activities, incorporating metal work and pottery. Ron also played a key role in the restoration of La Chaloupe, assists with countless projects for local residents as well as fund raising projects for the Workshop. |
| 2016 SPORTS AWARD Given for a noteworthy record of achievement in Sport, or for making a significant contribution to sport as a Coach, Official or Administrator. | ELLIE DOYLE Ellie has been nominated by members of the Huon Netball Association for her dedication, passion and commitment to the sport of netball in the Huon Valley. Ellie has followed in her mother’s footsteps, playing at the club since she was a child. She represented Tasmania for 3 years as a teenager and has represented the Huon as Captain in the Combined Australian Netball Association for over 15 years. Not only has Ellie been an exceptional player for Huon, she is also known for her coaching and umpiring skills, and a respected Committee Member for the Huon Netball Association. She took on the role of President for two years and most recently accepted the role as Marketing/Publicity and Grants Officer. Ellie is a passionate and proud member of the Huon Netball Association, always putting the players first and dedicating her time to the future of the club and development of the junior players. An enthusiastic and selfless community member, Ellie has also taken on a role on the Huon Little Athletics Committee, proving her commitment to the future of Huon Valley sport. All of this whilst working, and with a young family in tow, she is most worthy of this Australia Day Sports Award. |

Citizen of the Year 2015
Rod Gray
Rod has been nominated by a number of community members for his significant contribution to a large number of voluntary groups in the Huon Valley.
During the last 37 years Rod has volunteered his time for a huge range of community groups, including the Huon Valley Players, the initial Huon Valley Theatre Company and its replacement, the Huon Valley theatre Company Inc., the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, the Cygnet Singers, Huon FM, the Geeveston Historical Society, and Huon Valley Council’s Arts and Heritage Committee.
During this time Rod also worked as the Principal or Vice-Principal of Judbury Primary School, Geeveston District High School, and Huonville High School. While working for these schools Rod volunteered to teach and conduct local school choirs, and he continued to volunteer in this role well after he retired. Rod was also well-known for giving his own personal time to assist students with personal or academic problems.
Rod is being recognised as Citizen of the Year for the huge amount of time that he has volunteered to a wide range of groups, and to his students, over the past 37 years.

Keryn Gane
Keryn has been nominated by Sally Doyle for her exceptional community work.
Keryn is an active member of the Huon Pony Club and is always willing to help new, young riders. Keryn takes an interest in the Riding for the Disabled group, volunteers for the Kermandie Football Clubrooms Steering Committee, and she regularly involves herself in community events, such as the 100th Birthday Celebration event at the Geeveston Town Hall.
Keryn also participated in last year’s National Indigenous Youth Parliament, and was a finalist in the 2014 Sustainable Communities Awards for Youth Leadership.
Keryn is being recognised today for the volunteer and community work on behalf of a wide range of groups.

Craig Saunders (dec)
Craig Saunders is being commended for a life time of commitment to his community.
Over many years, Craig was an active volunteer in his community, and is acknowledged for his enthusiasm, organisational talent and energy that he displayed in the many facets of his volunteer work.
Craig’s volunteering involvement included the following groups:-
- President of the Huon Valley Concert Band
- Treasurer with Wildcare Inc
- Voluntary Editor with Wildtimes
- Tasmanian Sea Canoeing Club – where he was made a life member in 2010
- President of the Pelverata Hall Management Committee
- Member of the Hobart Wheeler Dirt Devils Cycling Club
Craig became involved in the Huon Valley Concert Band in 1995 and since this time the Band has grown into a dynamic team, where more than 200 members (present and former) owe a large debt to him for his organisational ability, foresight and leadership. The Huon Valley Concert Band is involved in many concerts throughout the Valley, and is an annual contributor to ceremonial occasions such as ANZAC Day and the Australia Day Awards event. We welcome the band here today.
Craig also had a passion for the environment, and was the Regional Volunteer Facilitator South with the Parks and Wildlife Service. He was involved with Wildcare Inc and was instrumental in this group accessing grants for environmental projects. Craig was also a voluntary Editor for Wildtimes which promotes and highlights the efforts of others. With his enthusiasm and energy, Craig had the ability to inspire others, and as a result many people have volunteered within their community.
Craig gave an extraordinary amount of time, energy and enthusiasm to the Tasmanian Sea Canoeing Club and introduced many people to sea kayaking. Craig was Commodore of the Club for four years from 1998 to 2001 and Vice-Commodore during 2002 and 2003. In his large shed at his family home in Pelverata, Craig assisted many people who couldn’t afford to buy a sea kayak to build their own boat and design and make the associated gear. Craig was made a life member of the Tasmanian Sea Canoeing Club in 2010 in recognition of his generous and enthusiastic efforts.
Craig and his family moved to Pelverata and Craig became involved with the hall management committee and was elected President of the committee at his first meeting. Craig inspired the small community and brought it back to life. The hall committee is a hard working group of volunteers, and without it and similar committees, the Council would be hard pressed to provide facilities to the communities of the Valley.
Craig joined as a member of the Hobart Wheeler Dirt Devils cycling club in 2007 and played a significant role in the group’s activities over many years. Craig became Volunteer Coordinator at a number of National Series events in Hobart between 2009 and 2011. He was held in such high regard for his organisational abilities that when the internationally recognised Oceania MTB event was run in Hobart earlier this year, the Cycling Australia event manager asked for Craig personally to assist at the event.
We are proud to extend the Huon Valley Citizen of the Year Award to Mr Craig Saunders.
Young Citizen of the Year 2014
Natalia Clark and Samantha Kluga
Natalia Clark and Samantha Kluga (Sammy) were nominated for this Award by Trish Doyle and I would like to read the nomination as it was received.
I would like to nominate Natalia Clark and Samantha Kluga (Sammy), as young citizens of the year. If they are not eligible for this award I would love for them to have some form of recognition or acknowledgement as I think that they are very deserving. Also it is very important that they are both recognised or not at all as they are best friends and do everything together.
Natalia and Sammy make it cool to be kind. They are both very family orientated and are happy to help out young and old.
As long as I have known both girls they have always been lovely, kind and willing to lend a hand. Both girls are involved in school sport with Sammy being named school athlete for 2012. Both are willing to represent their respective schools for sport or other duties. Natalia has been chosen to represent hers for the Beacon Foundation for 2014.
They have both represented their school for both Anzac and Remembrance Day services.
Both are very involved in Geeveston Girl Guides and went to Sydney with them this year. Before this trip they fundraised for the trip by selling raffle tickets, had a sausage sizzle and stall.
When my husband Gary passed away they were non-stop helping at his wake, making sure that everyone was fed and helping out at our Hardware with cleaning and running errands.
They helped to raise funds for the Steenholt family and helped with the Tom Duggan fundraiser.
Cultural & Community Builders Award 2014
Huon Valley Expo
The Cultural and Community Builders award is about acknowledging contributions made to the lives of residents through promoting skills, creating community and making connections through involvement in meaningful activities.
This award in 2014 is being awarded to the Huon Valley Expo.
In 2013 the Huon Valley Small Business Enterprise Centre along with the PCYC and Huon Valley Trade Training Centre organised and put on the second Huon Valley Expo showcasing the small businesses in the Huon Valley.
The event not only brought together many volunteers to plan and organise the event, but to implement and direct the event on the day. The Expo enabled businesses to exhibit and promote themselves to not only locals, but people from further afield, who were at times amazed at what a variety of products and services are available in this wonderful area.
More than 2,300 people attended the event, which is testament to the work the organisers did in promoting the Expo.
Sports Award 2014
Rex Voss
The first award is our Sports Award and is being presented to Rex Voss.
Rex has been involved with the Huonville Lions Football Club, helping in one way or another, for well over 50 years. No Club could ask for a more dedicated volunteer than Rex. He was made a Life member of the Club in 1969, and is still going strong.
Rex attends every training session during the football season, including the nights that the juniors train, and this takes up five nights a week. He also attends every junior game held at Franklin and helps wherever he is needed – whether that be in the kiosk or with the timekeeping.
Not only does Rex help out with the juniors, he is always available to help the senior players. During training sessions, whether it is pre-season from November, or throughout the regular competition season, he is found at the oval, recording the names of those who train – which is very helpful to the coaching staff. He makes sure drinks are available for all players, and helps clean up and put away all equipment used.
On home game days during the season, Rex is at the ground by 8am to make salad rolls, and assist the kiosk staff. Later in the afternoon, he will be in the interchange box recording players going on and off the field, which is a requirement of the Southern Football league governing body. He acts as an umpire escort when required.
Each Friday afternoon he goes to the clubrooms to help sort out the jumpers needed for the teams playing on Saturday, and cleans up and around the ground, also sweeping down the grandstand and checking all is in order to make a good impression for visiting teams.
After football season has finished, Rex dedicates his time to the Huon Show committee, helping to get the grounds and surrounds ready for Show Day. Not only that, for the past four years, he has helped the committee of A Taste of the Huon with their preparations.
