Precautions and management

Precautions should be taken with all chemical and toxic substances.

There are a few basic principles to follow when it comes to purchase, storage and disposals.

• try to buy only as much as you need
• when chemicals must be stored, always label with the date of storage and note the use-by date
• keep chemicals in a secure storage area out of reach of children and animals
• store away from heat and moisture and place on trays or mats that can collect any spills or leaks
• make sure the container is maintained in good condition
• do not mix chemicals together
• avoid contact with skin, always wear gloves and protective clothing when dealing with chemicals
• when using chemicals, read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions

drumMUSTER

drumMUSTER is a national recycling program for agricultural and veterinary chemical containers.

Empty, cleaned, non-returnable containers are accepted at the Southbridge Waste Transfer Station at Huonville every Tuesday and Thursday between 10am and 4pm. Bookings are essential for large loads.

ChemClear

ChemClear helps farmers and other users of agricultural and veterinary chemicals to manage chemical storages and to dispose of chemical waste.

Register your unwanted chemicals with ChemClear. Collections are scheduled based on the volume of chemical registrations received by region and state. On average, ChemClear undertakes two or three state collections and several regional collections each year.

To register unwanted chemicals, go to the ChemClear website or call 1800 008 182.

You will need to complete an inventory of your unwanted products before registering. The inventory should include:

• manufacturer’s name
• product name
• size of the container (e.g. 20 litres)
• an estimation of the remaining quantity
• the condition of the container (e.g. good, leaking, fragile)

If the chemical is unknown, your inventory should include:

• size of the container
• an estimation of the remaining quantity
• any identifiable indicators

May be disposed of at any Council waste transfer station.
