Community halls or centres are public facilities where all community members can gather for group activities, social support, public information or private functions. These facilities contribute to communities in various ways and the benefits for the community are many.
Each of Council’s halls have a dedicated committee that ensures the halls are maintained and loved for many to enjoy for years to come. So, if you have an event that you would like to hold in a Council Hall, please contact the Committee to see how they can help you. Contact details for each of the Committees are in with the information on the hall section below.

Cygnet Town Hall
14 Mary Street, Cygnet
Built in 1913, the Cygnet Town Hall is suitable for multiple purposes. The hall has been the heart of the social life of the Cygnet Community since its construction. It was regularly used for balls and dances and also was a cinema at one stage.
The versatility of the hall ensures that events small and big are held regularly. Regular long term uses include yoga, TSO concerts, Cygnet Folk Festival art groups as well as the monthly Cygnet Markets.
There is also a supper room upstairs of the hall. This can be used for classes, small concerts, film screenings, dance classes and meetings. The supper room can also be hired out separately.

Geeveston Community Hall
7 Brady Street, Geeveston
The Geeveston Community Hall backs onto Heritage Park that has been developed in recent years to include a new playground and new public toilets.
The Hall’s proximity to accommodation for elderly residents make it an important facility for senior community members. The hall has a use nearly every day including fitness sessions, seniors’ events, meetings, Guides and the local History group. The hall is also used for private functions such as weddings and birthday parties.
The location of the hall adjacent to Heritage Park has good opportunities for larger outdoor events. This is made evident by the annual Wheels in the Park Car and Bike Show.

Glen Huon Hall
841 Glen Huon Road, Glen Huon
The hall has been historically the Centre of the Glen Huon community and remains, along with the Glen Huon Primary School, as the geographically centre of Glen Huon.
As well as many public events, many private weddings, birthdays and parties have been celebrated in the hall. The hall has a certified commercial kitchen that can be hired separately.
This hall is located directly adjacent to the Glen Huon Park that also has BBQ facilities to be utilised all year around.
The hall and playground are is used by the management committee to host an outdoor family Christmas concert every year which has proved to be a huge success.

Jim Casey Oval & Clubrooms - Dover
7235 Huon Highway, Dover
The Dover Oval was originally situated in the Centre of town which is now Huon Regional Care. The old Dover Oval Clubrooms that were near the tennis courts is now the Dover Child Care Centre.
The old Dover Hospital was near the water on Bay View Road in the 80’s. A local resident, Jim Casey, suggested to move the oval and build a new medical Centre on the old oval. After much deliberation, this was approved and put into effect. Mr. Casey donated the land that now houses the Dover oval otherwise known as the Jim Casey Oval.
The planning and lobbying for the new clubrooms started in about 2004 and was officially opened in 2009. Over the years, the land and building have ended up with Council ownership with much of the same original committee still active members

Judbury Community Centre
1273 Glen Huon Road, Judbury
Built in 2010 to replace the condemned building onsite, Judbury Community Centre and Calvert Park are the social, historic and geographical Centre of Judbury locality.
Situated on the Huon River in a large recreational prescient that includes the cricket oval, Cricket Clubroom, Judbury Progress Association Building and a landing area primarily used for kayakers. The hall has two separate rooms that can be sectioned off by a partition. It also has a fully equipped kitchen that can service both rooms individually or as one.
The Judbury Community Centre Management Committee run a monthly market held on the second Sunday of the months September-May, that promotes local produce and handmade items.

Mountain River Hall

This hall was built in 1969 to replace the one that was destroyed in the 1967 Bushfires. This hall is ideal for bush dances, community get togethers and is the single locality marker for the Mountain River Community.
It has a small playground that is due for an asset upgrade, BBQ and a picnic table.
This hall is currently mostly used for yoga classes as a dedicated committee have taken the running of the hall in recent years.

Palais Theatre
3388 Huon Highway, Franklin
The Franklin Community and the management committee have a long-standing commitment to the running, use, conservation, maintenance and upgrading of the building. The Palais Theatre is now the cultural heart of Franklin and holds many events throughout the year.
Built in 1912, the Palais is the grandest of all public halls in the Huon Valley. The building was originally a Mechanics Institute and over time has housed a library, cinema, meeting rooms as well as hosting numerous private events including weddings.
The theatre is regularly used for performances and concerts, monthly markets, private events, monthly movie screenings and community consultations both by Huon Valley Council and other enterprises.

Pelverata Memorial Hall

Built in 1971, the hall was used for dances and social events since it was built. The previous timber hall was destroyed in the 1967 bushfires. The current hall is built on the site of what was the old Pelverata School.
The hall has an outdoor BBQ area that is used regularly for day use. The BBQ area also has an open fireplace that is welcomed among the users.

Ranelagh Soldiers Memorial Hall
40 Marguerite Street, Ranelagh
The Ranelagh Hall was built in 1924 to replace one that burned down. It was used for markets and entertainment and by the CWA for packing care packages for soldiers fighting overseas in WW2. It was also used for many years as a cinema. It has been used for quiz nights and other fundraising events run by Community groups as well as a church assembly place, youth club headquarters, and service club meeting place.
The Hall is an excellent venue for family and community events. The main hall, tea rooms or meeting room are all available for multipurpose use. The hall has a large capacity (180 people), is well resourced with tables, chairs, kitchen, catering equipment and has a stage area and meeting room facilities. The hall has disability access and a single disability toilet. There is ample parking at the front of the hall and some off-street parking at the side of the hall (where the disability access is located).
The Hall is used by a range of groups including the Tasmanian Family History Society Huon Branch, rhythmic dancing, and ball room dancing. In addition, the hall is used to support key Huon Valley community events such as Huon Agricultural Show, Taste of the Huon and as a polling both on election days.

Southport Community Centre
8606 Huon Highway, Southport
The Southport Community Centre is set in rolling wooded hills in the small coastal town of Southport and is the hub of many community events and gatherings in the far south.
The SCC Management Committee fundraised for and installed a wood-fired pizza oven and gazebo, a commercial kitchen and an arched intimate covered performance which connects the main building containing the large hall (also an indoor basketball court); the lounge area and commercial kitchen to the gazebo making a series of interconnected public spaces.
As a committee we market, we craft, we yoga, we festival, eat pizza and involve ourselves in linking the community through promoting shared interests and exploring local issues.

Surges Bay Hall

Having undergone recent cosmetic upgrade, the Surges Bay Hall is a simple rural hall and its chief asset is it idyllic setting.
This ‘complex’ consists of the hall, covered BBQ area and an unused oval. The hall is mostly used for private functions such as weddings and parties. The BBQ shelter gets the most use from locals.

Description of Hire Rates
Function Bonds for functions and events such as weddings, birthday parties, funerals and fundraisers where consumption of alcohol will take place.
General Bond to be applied at the discretion of the Hall Management Committee.
Hall Committee Market Stallholder Fee is assessed and resolved formally by the Hall Committee by way of a meeting minutes.
Meeting Room Rate is to be used when the venue is rented for a meeting, with 15 or less attendees, rather than an event or activity to a non-profit community organisation or group.
Other Rate: Health and Wellbeing Rate, Arts and Culture Rate and Community Development or Bona Fide Community Group Rate are to be applied when the venue is rented for an event or activity that does not aim to generate profit. Final discretion sits with the relevant Hall Committee.
If one Hall or Meeting room is utilised more than once a week by the same user, the hire fee can be discounted by 25%. This does not apply to the Heath and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Community Benefit or Bona Fide Community Group Rate.
In instances where the application of the above fees upon a group would cause undue hardships such as to preclude the viability of conducting an event, application may be made to the Director of Community Services for consideration of a reduction in the set fee.
In instances where a booking has been made at a quoted rate, the hirer will be charged that rate if the hire takes place within 6 months of the fees and charges varying. This provides hirers with 6 months notice to any change in hire fees.
Rooms should be left as found, if cleaning is required appropriate charge will be levied, if damage occurs appropriate charges will be deducted from the bond and/or charged to the hirer.
Additional Charges for extra technical equipment, room set-up/breakdown and services (e.g. cleaning) as assessed by the Hall Committee/Council Staff.

Committee Information Section
Being part of a hall management committee can be a rewarding way to participate in our community. Council’s community halls are venues where we can socialise, entertain and perhaps find a connection with our heritage.
We are interested in looking at opportunities to promote our halls as viable options as event venues, not only for the people of the Huon Valley but also for potential customers further afield.

Most Council-owned halls are managed by a committee. Fees are set by the Council and are charged based on a hall’s rating (category 1-3).
